Mid year progress

Its that time of the year for me to review my 6mm wargaming progress and see how I’m tracking with my goals. The focus this year was on finishing outstanding projects and hopefully not starting too many! So to begin, here is my original goals:-

  • Modern Arab/Iraqi forces
  • Modern Swedish
  • WW2 Early war British
  • WW2 Early war French
  • WW2 Late war German
  • Dark ages DBA Vikings
  • Battle of Britain planes
  • 6mm Sci-fi forces
  • FPW Prussian army
  • Fantasy Wood Elves
  • Fantasy Dragon knights
  • Late war WW2 British

Which is a lot of outstanding projects. Also the scenery goals were:-

  • Epic scenery
  • Dark ages scenery
  • French villages and country side pieces
  • General scenery
  • Sci-fi scenery

The painting goals for the year were 1000 figures and 200 vehicles/aircraft.

Scorecard

My tally at the end of June was 505 figures and 42 vehicles, and I’m very happy with the figure tally for the year. The vehicles I’m less worried about if I achieve the goal of 200 finished.

So far I have completed the following projects, which is 4 out of 12 done, which I’m pretty pleased with. I didn’t think I thought I would realistically be able complete all 12 in 2023, and the goals were really about working on incomplete armies. I think I can finish another 3 armies this year and make a decent dent in others.

  • Modern Arab/Iraqi forces (Completed)
  • WW2 Early war British (Completed)
  • Dark ages DBA Vikings (Completed*)
  • Fantasy Dragon knights (Completed)

On the scenery progress, I have finished the Dark ages buildings and all that is left to base them. I have also discovered a technique to make ruins I like so I can start on the Epic scenery, as I had a mental block trying to figure out how to model and paint them.

One of the new projects has appeared on the painting table with some FPW French. I decided instead of focusing purely on the Prussians, which I have quite a lot finished already, I should paint some French so I could start gaming with them.

And finally I acquired a new Norman army for Dark Ages, and I have changed wargames rules to Ravenfeast which means a bit more painting for the Vikings and Saxons, but I already had the figures and I feel much more enthused about the Ravenfeast rules compared to DBA.

Overall painted vs unpainted

This year I’ve brought around 300 6mm figures and 97 vehicles, vs 1440 figures and 98 vehicles purchased last year, so I’m making more of a dent in my collection. I started counting all my painted figures instead of just focusing on the unpainted, and I have 1903 vehicles/planes painted, compared to 1229 unpainted. Total figures is 4112 painted vs 4828 unpainted, but I’m still counting and will probably get to over 6000 painted. It seems staggering that I have over 3000 vehicles and aircraft in my collection! Time to paint some more.
