One of the project I’ve been working on is some armies for the Dark Ages, in 6mm of course. While Dark Ages has always been one of my favourite “Ancients” periods and I played some Dux Bellorum in a larger scale a few years ago, I struggled with them in 6mm. I had painted a few Vikings about 5 years ago and then lost interest in the armies, and then put them aside to sell. Fast forward to this year I was inspired to start back with period after seeing some amazing battle reports on Grymauch’s blog here.
So I dig out some undercoated Saxons and finished them! They were a a chore to paint with all the colours, but now they are finished my motivation is back!

Another aspect I have been struggling with is getting a base earth colour that I like. I have tried various browns and never really got the colour right until I painted these. It may sound crazy but this has held me back, knowing that I cannot get the right finish after all the painting effort!

I also brought the Hail Caesar Shieldwall book as it packed with scenarios and info, even though its likely I will play DBA (Big Battle), or Dux Bellorum.
Also this is the final unit of my painting try so I’ll blog on that in a day or so.
